KIRKWOOD, Mo. (October 27, 2024) – The 2024 Hieronymus Cup brought two fun days of golf competition to Greenbriar Hills Country Club, where the Men’s and Senior Men’s West teams emerged victorious in one of Missouri’s most anticipated match play events. The competition unfolded over three rounds, testing each golfer on Greenbriar’s beautiful, challenging par-71 course.
The Hieronymus Cup features both Men’s and Senior (50+) divisions. 20 players represented each team in a format that included four-ball, alternate shot, and singles matches, with each win earning one point and each tie earning half a point.
Day one began with four-ball matches on Saturday morning. In the Men’s division, the West team saw early victories, with Hunter Parrish (Columbia) & Tyler Peasel (Columbia) representing a strong pairing but ultimately falling to Jason White (St. Charles) & Corey Chaote (Eureka) in a close 2 & 1 match. However, Alex Downing (Lee’s Summit) & Taylor Lansford (Joplin) claimed a 4 & 3 victory over Patrick Britt (St. Louis) & Adam Pfeiffer (Quincy), while Bryan Wright (Stanberry) & Drew Hatten (Leawood) secured a 3 & 2 win over East’s captain Ryan Sullivan (Imperial) & Ryan Schuenke (Palmyra). At the end of the morning, the Men’s West team earned 3 points to the East’s 2, setting up for an afternoon showdown.
The Senior division found itself tightly matched, with Doug Flowers (Springfield) & Tim Holmes (Springfield) falling 2 & 1 to the East’s Bobby Godwin (Poplar Bluff) & Brian Lovett (St. Louis). The morning wrapped up in a 2.5-point tie, leaving both sides eager to establish an edge in the afternoon’s alternate shot format.
The alternate shot matches proved pivotal, particularly for the Senior East team, who swept the round and claimed all five matches. The East team’s Joseph Malench (Edwardsville) & Lovett earned a decisive 4 & 3 victory over Flowers & Holmes, pushing the Senior East team to a commanding lead of 7.5 to the West’s 2.5 at the end of the day. In the Men’s division, the East also took control in alternate shot, winning four of five matches to close the day with a 6-4 lead over the West team.
The final day of competition featured singles matches, where the Men’s West team began its comeback. Parrish came out strong with a dominant 6 & 4 win over Schuenke, while Wright defeated Eckelkamp 2 & 1, and Downing clinched a narrow 1 up win over Choate. In one of the most anticipated matches, Pfeiffer, the current Missouri Mid-Amateur champion, defeated Brad Nurski (St. Joseph), the current Missouri Amateur Champion, 4 & 3. However, with Locke, Lansford, and Hatten each contributing to the West’s score, the Men’s West team ultimately secured 6.5 points in the singles round, narrowly overtaking the East team with a final score of 10.5 to 9.5.
In the Senior division, the West team entered the day facing a significant deficit but surged with an impressive rally. Senior captain Harry Roberts (St. Joseph) led the charge, securing a 4 & 3 win over David Pfeil (Eureka), while Wayne Fredrick (Springfield) defeated Godwin 4 & 3. Steve Groom (Raytown) outlasted Buddy Allen (Pevely) 1 up, and Brett Allen (Columbia) recorded a dominant 6 & 5 victory over Brad Thielemier (Poplar Bluff). With a strong team performance, the Senior Men’s West team claimed 8.5 points on Sunday, overcoming the East team with a final score of 11 to 9, securing both divisional victories for the West.
