Missouri native recognized for his achievements as a player, instructor, and lifelong contributor to the game
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (October 26, 2026) – Missouri Golf is proud to announce the induction of West Plains native Stan Utley into the Missouri Golf Hall of Fame, recognizing a career that has taken him from junior golf in the Show-Me State to success on the PGA Tour and a reputation as one of the game’s most respected short-game instructors.
Utley’s connection to Missouri golf began long before his professional career. His early experiences competing in junior tournaments helped shape the skills and competitive mindset that would carry him through collegiate golf, professional competition and eventually into teaching. In 2026, Missouri Golf honored that connection by renaming its Missouri Junior Tour the Stan Utley Junior Tour, recognizing his accomplishments and commitment to the next generation of junior golfers across Missouri.
“I learned how to compete in Missouri junior golf. That’s where I figured out how to play when it mattered, and how to handle it when I didn’t play well. Having my name on the junior tour this year, and now going into the Hall of Fame, is a lot for a kid from Thayer/West Plains,” Utley said.
Utley established himself as one of Missouri’s top amateur golfers early in his career. Named an All-State golfer at West Plains High School in 1980, Utley went on to compete in five consecutive Missouri Amateur Championships from 1980 through 1984. His accomplishments in the championship included a runner-up finish 1983 at Jefferson City Country Club and a semifinal finish at Bellerive Country Club in 1984. Utley’s amateur success also included a win at the Dawson Invitational in 1983.
His success continued at the University of Missouri, where he helped lead the Tigers to the 1984 Big Eight Conference Championship and consecutive NCAA Championship appearances in 1983 and 1984. Utley earned three All-Big Eight selections and was recognized as a two-time All-American during his collegiate career.
Following college, Utley transitioned to professional golf, capturing the Kansas Open in 1986 and consecutive Missouri Open titles in 1988 and 1989. His professional career was highlighted by a victory at the 1989 Chattanooga Classic on the PGA Tour, along with three victories on the Nike Tour.
As his playing career evolved, Utley turned his attention toward teaching, developing a reputation as one of golf’s leading short-game instructors. His approach to putting and the short game has influenced players at every level, including major championship winners and PGA Tour professionals such as Sergio Garcia, Jay Haas, Darren Clarke, Rocco Mediate, Paul McGinley, Kevin Streelman and Bill Haas.
In 2006, Utley published The Art of Putting, which became a bestselling instructional golf book, further establishing his influence as an instructor and expanding his reach beyond the professional game.
Throughout his career, Utley has remained appreciative of the individuals who helped guide his development. He credits Ken Lanning for mentoring him as a junior golfer, University of Missouri coach Richard Poe for providing an opportunity to grow at the collegiate level, and Craig Harrison for helping him navigate the early years of his professional career.
Those relationships have helped shape Utley’s commitment to giving back to the game, particularly through junior golf. The renaming of the Missouri Junior Tour as the Stan Utley Junior Tour in 2026 serves as a lasting connection between his own experiences growing up in Missouri and the opportunities now available to young golfers across the state.
“Every part of my life in golf started in Missouri. The people here gave me tournaments to play in, coaches who cared, and a reason to keep at it. Going into the Hall of Fame means a great deal to me. What I care about most now is making sure the next kid gets the same chance I got,” Utley said.
Missouri Golf congratulates Stan Utley on his induction into the Missouri Golf Hall of Fame and recognizes his lasting contributions to the game as a competitor, instructor, and advocate for junior golf. From his early days competing in Missouri junior golf to his success on the professional stage, Utley’s career reflects the opportunities the game can provide and the importance of creating those same opportunities for future generations.
