A Century of Golf in Missouri
For more than a century, the Missouri Golf Association has played a key role in shaping golf across the state. From its early beginnings to today’s modern organization, its history reflects growth, tradition, and a deep commitment to the game.
1905–1930 The Founding Years – where Missouri golf took shape
The Missouri Golf Association was established in 1905 in St. Louis to organize the Missouri Amateur Championship. Four founding clubs—St. Louis Country Club, Algonquin Golf Club, Glen Echo Golf Club, and Normandie Golf Club—laid the foundation for competitive amateur golf in the state.
1930–1960 Growth & Championships
As golf continued to gain popularity, the MGA expanded its championship schedule and formalized its role as a governing body. This period marked the establishment of many cornerstone amateur events that helped elevate competitive golf throughout Missouri.
1960–1990 Expansion & Junior Golf
The latter half of the 20th century saw the MGA broaden its mission beyond competition. Junior golf programs, player development, and increased access to the game became central priorities, helping ensure the long-term health of golf in the state.
1990–Today A Modern Association
Today, the Missouri Golf Association combines tradition with innovation. Through championships, player services, course partnerships, and community engagement, the MGA continues to support golfers of all ages while preserving the integrity and spirit of the game.
