ST. LOUIS —The 115th Missouri Amateur Championship will be held at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis beginning on Monday, June 20 with 144 Missouri golfers vying for the championship title. The week-long tournament will conclude with the final 36-hole match played on Saturday, June 26. The last time the Missouri Amateur was held at Bellerive Country Club was in 1984.
Beginning in 1897, Bellerive was known as the St. Louis Field Club with a nine-hole course. The membership incorporated the name Bellerive Country Club in 1910 and redesigned the “new Bellerive” by Robert Foulis in Normandy, where the club stood for nearly 50 years. Led by Hord Hardin, Clark Gamble, and renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the membership decided to move west and relocate in 1955. The “Green Monster of Ladue Road” opened on Memorial Day of 1960 where it still remains today.
From the black tees, the course plays 7,460 yards for a par-72. The course has a rich history of hosting major events, with the most recent being The 100th PGA Championship in 2018.
“The Missouri Golf Association is excited for the opportunity to conduct the 115th Missouri Amateur Championship at Bellerive Country Club,” MGA Executive Director Scott Hovis said. “The course will offer a fantastic challenge for the players.”
The Amateur will feature a handful of past champions, including Curtis Brokenbrow (St. Louis, 2021), who competed collegiately for Missouri Baptist, and Walker Kesterson (Ashland, 2019) who competed for the University of Missouri.
Other past champions competing at Bellerive Country Club include three-time champion Brad Nurski (St. Louis, 2010, ‘17, ‘18), Wayne Fredrick (Springfield, 1996), Sam Migdal (St. Louis, 2016) and Skip Berkmeyer (St. Louis 1999, ‘09, ‘11).
The youngest player in the field is 15-year-old Ian Lambert (Jackson). He is one of 22 players in the field under 20 years old. These teens will square off during stroke play with players at least double their senior, including two participants at least 60 years old. Jim Holtgrieve, two-time amateur champion (St. Louis, 1978, ‘81), is the oldest player in the field at 74.
The week will begin with two rounds of qualifying stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, after which the field will be cut from 144 to 64 players. Rounds 1 and 2 will be followed with a round of 64 match play on Wednesday.
Two rounds of match play will be conducted on both Thursday and Friday, with the winners of each match continuing on to the next round. The semi-final round will include the top four players and will be held in the afternoon on Friday. The final 36-hole match will be held on Saturday to determine the champion.
