Senior Series Finishes First Day in Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. – Today, Sept. 12, 48 senior golfers competed in a Senior Series event held at Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Golfers teed off with a noon shotgun start looking to shoot the lowest score in a round of stroke play.

Senior Series events are open to golfers who are members of the MGA and 50 years of age or older. Competitors compete in flights based on their age as of April 18, 2022. 

Winning the 64 and Under Open flight, David Pfeil (Eureka) shot one under par, 70. Robert Godwin (Poplar Bluff) came in second at even par, 71, and Neil Atkinson (Jefferson City) took home third with a score of two over, 73.

Robert Trittler (Wentzville) won the 65 and Over Open flight after shooting two over, 73. Anthony Brown (St. Louis) was close behind at three over, 74, and Herb Sandker (Hermitage) took third at four over, 75.

Scott Wingert (Camdenton) was the winner of the 64 and Under Net flight with a score of one under, 70. Mike Domenick (Festus) came in second at one over, 72. And two players tied for third place with a score of 5 over, 76: Russ Fees (Dadeville) and Steve Rhodes (Jackson).

In the 65-69 Net flight, Dana Elwell (Nixa) was victorious with a score of one under, 70. He was followed by Arnold Bailey (Linn) in second at four over, 75, and Stephen Maier (Jefferson City) in third at five over, 76.

Finally, David Samp (Moberly) won the 70+ Net division at two over, 73, and Tom Kempf (Washington) followed behind at five over, 76. Three players tied for third place with a score of six over, 77: Daric Elwell (Warrensburg), John Abercrombie (Cape Girardeau), and Gerald Oney (Walnut Shade).

The Missouri Golf Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf throughout the State of Missouri. The Missouri Golf Association was started in St. Louis in 1905 to run the Amateur Championship. Four founding clubs would be the ones in existence in St. Louis in those early years – St. Louis Country Club, Algonquin Golf Club, Glen Echo Golf Club and Normandie Golf Club. Four years later, the invite-only Missouri Amateur was held in Kansas City at Evanston Club. 1911 marked the real organization of the MGA with Bonner Miller as Secretary and Executive Director. Ever since then, the MGA has striven to provide tournaments and spaces for Missouri golfers to sharpen their skills and enjoy the game.
