Final Recap

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Oct. 8. 2023) – The annual Hieronymus Cup Matches concluded today at Columbia Country Club. A total of 40 golfers qualified for this tournament based on points earned throughout the season.

The men’s West Team was victorious and the Senior East Team secured the win!

The morning kicked off with singles matches. In the men’s division, the West Team came into the round leading over the East six points to four.

The West Team won four singles matches and tied three to earn 5.5 points this round.

West player Brad Nurski defeated Ryan Schuenke 1 up. Tyler Stalker with the West beat Ryan Sullivan 4 & 3. West player Kory Franks beat Jason White 1 up. And John Fuchs with the West Team won against Corey Choate 5 & 3.

The East Team saw three wins this round. Adam Pfeiffer defeated West player Hunter Parrish 2 & 1. East competitor Brad Carpenter beat Alex Locke 1 up. And Tony Gumper with the East won versus Brian Bennett 1 up.

There were three ties: East’s Chris Kovach versus West’s Bryan Wright, East’s Alex Downing versus West’s Ryan Eckelkamp, and East’s Patrick Britt versus West’s Chase Gafner.

After this round, the West Team finished with 11.5 total points and the East saw a total of 8.5. Congratulations, West Team!

In the Senior division, the East Team rallied and had a great singles round to win the tournament! They came into the singles round one point behind the Senior West Team, and then won six singles matches and tied one.

East player Joseph Malench beat Jeff Eiserman 5 & 4. Buddy Allen with the East Team won against Harry Roberts 2 up. East Team player Kirk Viehl bested Ed Brown 3 & 2. Brian Hall with the East won versus Doug Flowers 5 & 4. East Team Captain David Pfeil beat Kevin Rome 4 & 2. And David Bremer with the East defeated Wayne Fredrick 7 & 6.

The West Team had three wins. Tim Holmes with the West won against Tony Nolfo 3 & 2. West Team player Brian Haskell beat Brian Lovett 5 & 4. And Steve Groom from the West won versus Mike Domenick 4 & 3.

There was one tie between East player Bobby Godwin and West player Chuck Admire.

After all the matches were said and done, the Senior East Team had a total of 11 points and the Senior West Team finished with nine. Congratulations to the Senior East Team!

Day 1 Recap

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Oct. 7, 2023) – The Missouri Golf Association held the first round of the annual Hieronymus Cup today at Columbia Country Club. A total of 40 golfers qualified for this tournament based on points earned at events throughout the season.

The morning kicked off with four ball matches starting at 9:05 a.m. and was followed in the afternoon with alternate shot matches.

After the first day, in the men’s division, the West Team is leading with six total points; the East Team earned four points on the first day. 

The West Team won three out of the five four ball matches. Three of the matches were very close.

West members Brian Bennett and Tyler Stalker defeated East members Patrick Britt and Brad Carpenter 5 & 4. West golfers Alex Locke and Hunter Parrish narrowly defeated East golfers Chris Kovach and Adam Pfeiffer 1 up. And West players Brad Nurski and Bryan Wright beat East players Corey Choate and Jason White 2 up. These three wins gave the West Team three points for the round.

The East had two wins for two points. East members Ryan Schuenke and Ryan Sullivan beat Chase Gafner and Kory Franks with the West Team 2 up. And East players Ryan Eckelkamp and Tony Gumper defeated the West’s Alex Downing and John Fuchs 3 & 2.

Going into the alternate shot round, the West was leading three points to two. 

Out of the five alternate shot matches, the West Team won three and the East Team took the other two.

Locke and Stalker defeated Pfeiffer and Eckelkamp 5 & 4, Bennett and Gafner won against Choate and White 2 up, and Nurski and Parrish bested Gumper and Schuenke 4 & 2. 

For the East Team, Britt and Sullivan beat Fuchs and Franks 2 & 1 and Carpenter and Kovach defeated Downing and Wright 5 & 4.

After both rounds of play, the West Team is leading with six points to the East Team’s four. 

Competition is stiff in the Senior division, with the Senior West Team earning 5.5 points and the Senior East Team earning 4.5 points after day one!

The Senior West Team mirrored the men’s West Team in the first round, also winning three matches.

West Team members Ed Brown and Tim Holmes defeated David Pfeil and Brian Lovett with the East Team 2 & 1. West teammates Doug Flowers and Kevin Rome beat East Team members Mike Domenick and Tony Nolfo 2 & 1. And Chuck Admire and Harry Roberts on the West side beat East players Bobby Godwin and Brian Hall 4 & 3. 

Buddy Allen and David Bremer with the East Team won against the West Team’s Wayne Fredrick and Jeff Eiserman 2 & 1. Joseph Malench and Kirk Viehl secured the East Team’s second win against Steve Groom and Brian Haskell with the West Team 2 & 1. 

After the four ball round, the Senior West Team was leading three to two.

The teams came out even after the alternate shot round, both winning two matches and tying one.

Admire and Flowers for the West Team defeated Allen and Bremer 2 & 1 and Eiserman and Fredrick secured the other West win against Lovett and Pfeil with a score of 3 & 2.

Malench and Viehl for the East Team beat Groom and Haskell 5 & 3 and the East Team’s Domenick and Nolfo won versus Brown and Rome 1 up.

There was a tie between Holmes and Roberts on the West side and Godwin and Hall on the East, earning both teams half a point.

With the West Team having a solid first round and the two teams splitting the second round, we are headed into day two with West at 5.5 points and East at 4.5.

Play will continue tomorrow, Oct. 8, with single matches in the morning. After all play has finished, the MGA will award the two winning teams.

The Missouri Golf Association was started in St. Louis in 1905 to run the Amateur Championship.
