Final Recap

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 13, 2023) – The 34th annual Senior Amateur Championship concluded today at Algonquin Golf Club in St. Louis. A total of 119 male golfers aged 50 or older competed in two rounds of stroke play for the championship title.

In the Championship division, Sean McQueary (Springfield) shot the lowest score of the tournament in today’s round to move up the leaderboard into first! He finished at three under, 139 (72, 67). Tom Barry (St. Louis) was the runner-up, shooting two under, 140 (71, 69), and Christian Corpe (Lake Ozark) placed third at one under, 141 (72, 69).

Don Kuehn (Kansas City) was the champion of the Super Senior division at one under, 141 (73, 68), and John Bailey (Nashville) had two consistent rounds to take second place with a score of three over, 145 (72, 73). Robert Trittler (Wentzville) and Tom Leonard (Leawood) tied for third place, both shooting nine over, 151. 

Finally, Terry Souchek (Columbia) won the Net division at 10 over, 152 (75, 77). Arnold Bailey (Linn) had a great second round to move into second place at 11 over, 153 (79, 74) and Marvin Frazier (Festus) finished in third place with a score of 12 over, 154 (76, 78).

Day 1 Recap

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 12, 2023) – The first round of the 34th annual Senior Amateur Championship took place today at Algonquin Golf Club in St. Louis. A total of 119 male golfers 50 years or older from across Missouri competed in today’s first round of stroke play.

There are three divisions in this event: Championship, Super Senior (65+) and Net. In the Net division, handicap scores are considered and handicap strokes are deducted from final scores.

Competition is very stiff in all three divisions! Kirk Viehl (Edwardsville) is currently on top of the Championship division, shooting three under, 68, for the day. Dan Luebbert (Holts Summit) and David Bremer (St. Louis) are tied for second place at two under, 69. 

John Bailey (Nashville) is leading the Super Senior division at one over, 72. And Tom Leonard (Leawood) and Don Kuehn (Kansas City) are right behind, tied for second place at two over, 73.

Finally, Terry Souchek (Columbia) is the current leader in the Net division, shooting four over, 75, in the first round. Kirby Joy (St. Joseph) and Marvin Frazier (Festus) are tied for second place at five over, 76.

ABOUT MGA:

The Missouri Golf Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf throughout the State of Missouri. The Missouri Golf Association was started in St. Louis in 1905 to run the Amateur Championship. Four founding clubs would be the ones in existence in St. Louis in those early years – St. Louis Country Club, Algonquin Golf Club, Glen Echo Golf Club and Normandie Golf Club. Four years later, the invite-only Missouri Amateur was held in Kansas City at Evanston Club. 1911 marked the real organization of the MGA with Bonner Miller as Secretary and Executive Director. Ever since then, the MGA has striven to provide tournaments and spaces for Missouri golfers to sharpen their skills and enjoy the game.
