JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (Aug. 27, 2023) – Today, the Missouri Golf Association crowned Nicholas Sheppard from Springfield as the 29th Mid-Amateur Champion! A full field of 120 golfers have played two rounds of stroke play at Jefferson City Country Club the past two days, and Sheppard had the lowest gross score at nine under, 135 (66, 69). 

Adam Pfeiffer (Quincy) was the Mid-Am runner-up with a score of seven under, 137 (70, 67). Kory Bowman (Springfield) shot five under, 139 (70, 69), to take third place. 

Ed Brown (Independence) won the Senior division, shooting two under, 142 (72, 70) over the two rounds. David Strickland (Fenton) finished even with par, 144 (68, 76), earning second place, and Kirk Viehl (Edwardsville) rounded out the podium at three over, 147 (75, 72).

Finally, Ron Eilers (Columbia) was the winner of the Super Senior division with a gross score of eight over, 152 (77, 75). Robert Trittler (Wentzville) came in a close second at nine over, 153 (75, 78), and Don Kuehn (Kansas City) took third place, shooting 13 over, 157 (82, 75).

Day 1 Recap

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (Aug. 26, 2023) – The Missouri Golf Association held the first round of the 29th Mid-Amateur Championship and JCCC Memorial Tournament at Jefferson City Country Club today. A full field of 120 golfers separated into different divisions played a round of stroke play. 

The round began with 7:30 a.m. tee times this morning. Nicholas Sheppard (Springfield) is currently leading the Championship division with a score of six under, 66. Tanner Elder (Jefferson City) and Connor McHenry (Jefferson City) are tied for second place, both shooting three under, 69.

David Strickland (Fenton) is the current leader in the Senior division, shooting four under, 68, and David Pfeil (Eureka) is in second at one under, 71. Three players are tied for third, all shooting par, 72, in round one: Ed Brown (Independence), Tom Barry (St. Louis) and Tony Nolfo (Festus).

And finally, Robert Trittler (Wentzville) is sitting in first in the Super Senior division after shooting three over, 75, for the day. Ron Eilers (Columbia) is in second at five over, 77, and Bob Meeh (Eureka) and George Bowler (Warrensburg) are tied for third place, both shooting eight over, 80.

Play will continue tomorrow with 7:30 a.m. tee times. At the end of the second round, the MGA will award the players with the lowest gross scores in each division at an awards ceremony.

The Missouri Golf Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf throughout the State of Missouri. The Missouri Golf Association was started in St. Louis in 1905 to run the Amateur Championship. Four founding clubs would be the ones in existence in St. Louis in those early years – St. Louis Country Club, Algonquin Golf Club, Glen Echo Golf Club and Normandie Golf Club. Four years later, the invite-only Missouri Amateur was held in Kansas City at Evanston Club. 1911 marked the real organization of the MGA with Bonner Miller as Secretary and Executive Director. Ever since then, the MGA has striven to provide tournaments and spaces for Missouri golfers to sharpen their skills and enjoy the game.
