Final Recap

FULTON, Mo. (June 29, 2023) – Missouri Golf Association President Wayne Fredrick (Springfield) is the first to hold the title of Senior Match Play Champion! The MGA held its inaugural Senior Match Play Championship this week from June 26-29 at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, Missouri, ending with today’s final match.

Fredrick faced Buddy Allen (Pevely) in the final 18-hole match. Fredrick got off to a quick start and was 2 up by the third hole. Allen responded by winning holes 4 and 6, but Fredrick still held a 2 up lead entering the back nine with wins on holes 5 and 9.

Allen began a comeback, winning holes 10 and 11 to tie up the match. Fredrick briefly went up 1 with a win on hole 12, but Allen won hole 13 to tie it up once again. This back-and-forth pattern continued, with Fredrick winning hole 16 and Allen winning 17. 

With a tied match and just one hole remaining, Fredrick shot a birdie to win hole 18, the match and the Championship.

Congratulations to both Fredrick and Allen on a hard fought match and a successful tournament!

Day 3 Recap

FULTON, Mo. (June 28, 2023) – The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of match play took place today at the Missouri Golf Association’s first annual Senior Match Play Championship, held at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, Missouri. 

The morning began with our quarterfinal round. There were two close matches, but none went to extra holes. David Johnson (Kirwood) beat his opponent Ed Brown (Independence) with a score of 1 up. Wayne Fredrick (Springfield) did the same, battling his opponent Joseph Malench (Edwardsville) until the 18th hole and winning with a score of 1 up. 

Buddy Allen (Pevely) beat Pat O’Neil (St. Louis) with a score of 3 & 2, and Jeff Ryan (Half Way) took his match against Tim Holmes (Springfield) with a score of 2 & 1. 

After the quarterfinal rounds concluded, the semifinal round began in the afternoon. Both winners held the lead for the majority of their matches. Allen took the win over Johnson with a score of 5 & 4. Fredrick dominated his match against Ryan, winning with a score of 5 & 3. 

The championship match will take place tomorrow, June 29, at 7:30 a.m.

Day 2 Recap

FULTON, Mo. (June 27, 2023) – The first two rounds of match play took place today at the Missouri Golf Association’s first annual Senior Match Play Championship, held at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, Missouri. 

The morning began with our round of 32. We saw several close matches, with three going to 19 holes: David Johnson (Kirkwood) defeated Steve Groom (Raytown), David Pfeil (Eureka) beat David Strickland (Fenton) and Chuck Admire (Kansas City) won against Tom Pruden (Wildwood).

There were also three matches where the winner won 1 up: Mike Domenick (Festus) beat Barry Yehling (St. Louis), Joseph Malench (Edwardsville) won versus Bob Meeh (Eureka) and Jeff Ryan (Halfway) defeated Brett Allen (Columbia).

After all of the round of 32 matches concluded, the round of 16 began in the afternoon. Every match was close. Malench defeated Brian Haskell (St. Joseph) in 19 holes, and there were four matches ending with a winning score of 1 up: Johnson defeated Brian Hall (O’Fallon), MGA President Wayne Fredrick (Springfield) beat Kyle Viehl (Maryville), Ryan won against Harry Roberts (St. Joseph) and Tim Holmes (Springfield) won versus Admire.

Two more rounds of match play will take place tomorrow, June 28, with the Quarterfinal round in the morning and the Semifinal round in the afternoon.

Day 1 Recap

FULTON, Mo. (June 26, 2023) – The Missouri Golf Association’s inaugural Senior Match Play Championship began today at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, Missouri. A total of 54 players are competing in this event, and today they played a round of stroke play to qualify for the match play rounds.

The field of 54 was cut to the lowest 32 scorers. Ed Brown (Independence) finished with the lowest score at three under, 69. Brian Haskell (St. Joseph) had the second lowest score at two under, 70, and Harry Roberts (St. Joseph) and David Strickland (Fenton) tied for the the third lowest at one under, 71. The cut was +5.

Play will continue tomorrow, June 27, with the round of 32 matches held in the morning followed by the round of 16 in the afternoon.

The Missouri Golf Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf throughout the State of Missouri. The Missouri Golf Association was started in St. Louis in 1905 to run the Amateur Championship. Four founding clubs would be the ones in existence in St. Louis in those early years – St. Louis Country Club, Algonquin Golf Club, Glen Echo Golf Club and Normandie Golf Club.
