2023 Four Ball Champions Crowned At Lake Valley Golf Club

CAMDENTON, Mo. (Aug. 13, 2023) – The team of Tony Gumper (St. Charles) and Ryan Eckelkamp (Washington) had a great second round today at the 35th annual Four Ball Championship, shooting 12 under in the second round to place first and win the title in the Championship Division. The duo saw 11 birdies and one eagle today to finish the tournament at 23 under, 121. 

The Four Ball Championship, held at Lake Valley Golf Club in Camdenton, had its second round of 18-hole best ball today beginning with 9 a.m. tee times. 

The Championship Division saw very close competition, but Gumper and Eckelkamp took the title with a three-stroke lead. After finishing round one sitting in first place, the team of Corey Choate (Eureka) and Jason White (St. Charles) shot 10 under, 62, for a gross score of 123, putting them in second place. 

Brad Carpenter (Washington) and Kory Franks (Lake Ozark) placed third with a total score of 17 under, 127, and five birdies and one eagle on the day. 

The Net Division was equally competitive. Scott Jones (Jefferson City) and Connor McHenry (Jefferson City) took first after shooting 10 under in round 2 for a total score of 19 under, 125. Jeff Vineyard (Kearney) and Bill Griffey (Excelsior Springs) came in close at second place with a total score of 18 under, 126, after the two days of competition. 

The team of Mike Larsen (Jefferson City) and Cole Stirewalt (Jefferson City) came in third place with a gross score of 16 under, 128.

Day 1 Recap

CAMDENTON, Mo. (Aug. 12, 2023) Corey Choate (Eureka) and Jason White (St. Charles) are leading the Championship Division after the first round of play at the 35th annual Four Ball Championship at Lake Valley Golf Club in Camdenton. 

Play today started with 8 a.m. tee times, where 54 teams fought for the championship title.

Choate and White finished the first round with a score of 11 under, 61. Three teams followed right behind tied for second, all shooting 10 under, 62: Noah Naugle (Nixa) & Max Bowman (Springfield), Kory Franks (Lake Ozark) & Brad Carpenter (Washington) and Tony Gumper (St. Charles) & Ryan Eckelkamp (Washington).

In the net division, Bill Griffey (Excelsior Springs) & Jeff Vineyard (Kearney) are leading the field at 10 under, 62. Scott Jones (Jefferson City) & Connor McHenry (Jefferson City) are sitting in second at nine under, 63, and four teams are tied for third with a score of eight under, 64: Mike Larsen (Jefferson City) & Cole Stirewalt (Jefferson City), John Larson (Shawnee) & Brian Moeller (Shawnee), Chris Rackers (Jefferson City) & Matt Clement (Jefferson City) and Mike Snyder (Jefferson City) & Keegan McHenry (Jefferson City).

The final round of best ball will take place tomorrow to determine the flight winners. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m.

The Missouri Golf Association was started in St. Louis in 1905 to run the Amateur Championship. Four founding clubs would be the ones in existence in St. Louis in those early years – St. Louis Country Club, Algonquin Golf Club, Glen Echo Golf Club and Normandie Golf Club. Four years later, the invite-only Missouri Amateur was held in Kansas City at Evanston Club. 1911 marked the real organization of the MGA with Bonner Miller as Secretary and Executive Director.
