Race for Match Play Takes Shape After Opening Round of 119th Missouri Amateur Championship

June 23, 2026

KANSAS CITY (June 23, 2026) – The opening round of the 119th Missouri Amateur Championship is in the books, and the race to secure one of 64 spots in match play is well underway at Milburn Country Club.

Players were greeted by partly cloudy skies and winds around 8 miles per hour throughout Tuesday’s first round of stroke-play qualifying. While weather conditions remained favorable, Milburn’s fast greens proved to be a difficult test for the field as 144 competitors began their pursuit of Missouri Golf’s oldest championship.

After the first of two qualifying rounds, Hermann’s Trigg Lindahl, Leawood’s Brady Rapp, and Quincy’s Ryan Schuenke share the lead at 3-under-par 69.

Lindahl carded a bogey-free round to earn a share of the lead, while Rapp recorded seven birdies during his opening-round performance. Schuenke matched the leading score with a round highlighted by four birdies.

Just one shot back are Olathe’s Tyler Strong, Lee’s Summit’s Stone Yerington, Olathe’s Myles Tarvin and Saint Charles’ Tony Gumper, who each posted rounds of 2-under-par 70 to remain firmly in contention entering Wednesday’s final qualifying round.

Defending champion Chad Niezing of Manchester opened his title defense with a 2-over-par 74 and remains in a strong position heading into Wednesday’s final qualifying round as he looks to secure a spot in match play.

Four-time Missouri Amateur champion Brad Nurski of St. Joseph withdrew from the championship prior to the opening round due to injury. Nurski entered the week seeking his fifth Missouri Amateur title.

The championship began with players competing in two waves from both the No. 1 and No. 10 tees. Following Wednesday’s second round of stroke-play qualifying, the field will be reduced from 144 players to the low 64 competitors who will advance to match play.

With only one round remaining before the championship transitions to match play, every stroke will carry added importance as players battle to extend their week and improve their seeding for the bracket portion of the championship.

Second-round tee times will begin at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday at Milburn Country Club. At the conclusion of play, the match-play field will be set and the chase for the 119th Missouri Amateur Championship will continue.
