SEDALIA, Mo – Today, Oct. 13, 2022, the final event of the Missouri Golf Association concluded: the annual Senior Cup Matches, consisting of the Ozark Senior Cup and the Association Senior Cup. These two events were held at Sedalia Country Club in Sedalia, Mo. 

After calculating all of the scores of both the gross and net divisions, Missouri and Kansas tied for the win in the Ozark Cup! This is only the second time in 15 years of play that the tournament has ended in a tie. The record is now Missouri 9 wins, Kansas 4 wins, and 2 ties. 

And for the Association Senior Cup, Missouri pulled out a dominating win with a score of 12.5 points to Kansas’ 7.5. Congratulations to Team Missouri for such a great performance!

Today’s play only consisted of one round of single matches. The Ozark Cup’s single matches began with 8:50 a.m. tee times.

In the gross division, there were eight total matches, and Missouri won four of them and tied two. The winning Missouri competitors were as follows: David Pfeil (Eureka) beat Kansas player Sean Robertson 4 & 2; Sean McQueary (Springfield) defeated Kirk Holmberg from Kansas 4 & 3; Tony Nolfo (Festus) won against Kansas golfer Brad Woley 2 up; and Steve Groom (Raytown) won a match after his competitor, John Bailey from Kansas, conceded.

Robert Godwin (Poplar Bluff) tied with Kansas player RJ Opliger, and Brad Thielemier (Poplar Bluff) tied with Kansas’ Bud Stagg. 

These four wins and two ties gave Team Missouri 5 total points.

In the net division, Missouri won just one of six matches, and tied in two. Tim Borman (Kingdom City) pulled out Missouri’s sole win against Kansas’ Todd Hyatt 5 & 4. Tim Majerus (Columbia) and George Barkho (Fulton) both tied in their matches against their Kansas counterparts.

These two ties and one win earned Missouri another 2 points, for a total of 7 points in the single round. 

Both Kansas and Missouri earned seven points on the second day, and entered the round already tied 7 – 7, leaving both teams with a final score of 14. Congratulations to everyone for such a close competition!

In the Association Cup, Missouri entered the second day of play with a large lead over Kansas, with a score of 8 – 2. 

In the gross division, Missouri pulled out wins in half of the matches. Don Kuehn (Kansas City) defeated Kansas golfer Doug Durr 6 & 5; Anthony Brown (St. Louis) beat Doug Alt from Kansas 2 & 1; and finally, Jim Beatson (Camdenton) won a very close match against Kansas’ Kevin Belkmap 1 up. These three wins added three more points to Missouri’s total.

In the net division, Missouri was able to win one match and tie in another. Dana Elwell (Nixa) won against Kansas player Don Noller 3 & 2, and Charles Kaiser (Jefferson City) tied with his Kansas opponent Chris Luck. This added another 1.5 points for Missouri.

After adding together gross and net scores, Team Missouri was victorious with a score of 12.5 to Kansas’ 7.5.

Great job Team Missouri! You represented the state well!

SEDALIA, Mo. – Today, Oct. 12, 2022 marked the first day of the annual Senior Cup Matches, which consists of the Ozark Senior Cup and Association Senior Cup, both of which are being held at Sedalia Country Club in Sedalia, Mo. 

The Ozark Cup Challenge (50-64) and Association Cup Matches (65 and over) are goodwill competitions currently played between teams from the Kansas and Missouri Golf Associations. Players for each team qualified for these competitions through each association’s respective Senior Series programs. 

For the Ozark Cup Challenge, the Missouri team consists of the top seven gross contestants, top five net contestants, and two captain’s picks, for a total of 14 players. For the Missouri Association Cup Team, the top five gross contestants, top three net contestants, and two captain’s picks are on the team for a total of 10 players at least 65 or older. 

On today’s schedule were two rounds: four ball and alternate shot.

In the Ozark Cup, four ball tee times began at 8:30 a.m. In the gross division, Team Missouri pulled out one win and one tie out of four total matches. The team of Tony Nolfo (Festus) and Brad Thielemier (Poplar Bluff) beat the Kansas Team of Bud Stagg and Brad Woley 3 & 2. And the Missouri Team of Sean McQueary (Springfield) and David Pfeil (Eureka) tied with Kansas’ Kirk Holmberg and Sean Robertson. This win and tie earned 1.5 points for Missouri, leaving the gross four ball score at 1.5 Missouri – 2.5 Kansas. 

There were only three four ball matches in the net division, and Missouri won one and tied one. Missouri’s Russ Fees (Dadeville) and Tim Majerus (Columbia) beat the Kansas group of Tony Fawl and Tony Shearburn 4 & 3, and Missouri pair Robert Bender (St. Louis) and Mike Domenick (Festus) tied with Kansas’ Todd Bonewell and Jay Stephenson. This win and tie earned a total of 1.5 points for the round, leaving Kansas with 1.5 points of their own.

Following the four ball round, Kansas was leading Missouri in the Ozark Cup 4 to 3 after combining gross and net scores.

Moving to the Association Senior Cup, the four ball round began with 9:40 a.m. tee times. In the gross division, Team Missouri was very successful, winning each of the three matches. Jim Beatson (Camdenton) and Robert Trittler (Wentzville) beat the Kansas team of Doug Durr and Sam Vanlandingham 6 & 5, Don Kuehn (Kansas City) and Parker Morgan (Springfield) defeated Kansas’ Doug Alt and Randy Vautravers 3 & 2, and Anthony Brown (St. Louis) and Ron Eilers (Columbia) won against the Kansas pair of Kevin Belkmap and Joe Rothwell 1 up. This great performance earned Team Missouri three points.

Out of the two net four ball matches, Missouri won one. Charles Kaiser (Jefferson City) and Terry Souchek (Columbia) defeated David Steeples and Don Noller from Kansas 2 & 1, earning one point. 

Following the four ball round, Missouri was leading Kansas in the Association Senior Cup 4 to 1 after combining gross and net scores.

In the afternoon, alternate shot matches were held. In the Ozark Cup, tee times started at 2 p.m. In the gross division, Kansas and Missouri split the round with two wins each. The Missouri wins came from the teams of Nolfo & Thielemier, who beat Greg Goode and RJ Opliger from Kansas 4 & 3, and Brett Allen (Columbia) & Steve Groom (Raytown), who defeated Kansas team Stagg & Brad Woley 1 up. This round gave each team two points.

In the net division, Missouri won three alternate shot matches and lost one. Bender and Domenick beat Fawl and Shearburn from Kansas 4 & 3, and George Barkho (Fulton) and Tim Borman (Kingdom City) defeated Kansas’ Bonewell & Stephenson 2 & 1. This earned Team Missouri two points.

After the two gross wins and two net wins, Missouri tied things up with Kansas, leaving the total Ozark Cup score after both four ball and alternate shot 7 – 7.

In the Association Senior Cup, alternate shot tee times began at 3 p.m. In the gross division, Missouri dominated Kansas once again and won all three matches in the alternate shot round. Beatson & Trittler beat Alt & Vautravers from Kansas 4 & 3, Kuehn & Morgan defeated Kansas pair Belkmap & Rothwell 2 & 1, and Missouri’s Brown & Eilers won a close match 2 up against Durr & Vanlandingham. Another three points for Team Missouri were earned here.

In the net division, Missouri won one match and lost the other. The team of Kaiser & Souchek defeated the Kansas group of Chris Luck & Keith Schlaegel 5 & 4, earning another point for Team MO.

After finishing all rounds on day one and adding gross and net scores, Missouri is leading Kansas in the Association Senior Cup 8 – 2. 

Play will continue tomorrow with single matches, with tee times starting at 8 a.m.
