Hieronymus Cup Teams Split at the Country Club at St. Albans

Yesterday in singles play the West “open” division team continued their dominance over the East with a 7.5 to 2.5 win in the session and an overall score of 13 to 7 for the “open” division Cup. Eight of the 10 singles matches came down to the 18th hole and made the final result not as lopsided as it might appear. For whatever reason, the East found a way to lose or halve the 18th when they needed a win to get a full or half point.

West Captain Antonio Serrano was happy with the hard fought win. “I guess we did just enough in those many close matches—including mine,” he said. (Serrano went off first and won 1 up over Buddy Allen when Allen’s birdie putt on 18 failed to go in.) “It was a true team effort as everyone from the West contributed on Saturday, Sunday, or both days.”

The West entered Sunday’s play with a slim 5.5 to 4.5 edge after the Saturday best ball and foursomes matches.

The East Senior squad built up a commanding 9 to 1 lead after Saturday’s sessions and cruised to a 15 to 5 victory to win the Cup in the Senior division. The teams appeared evenly matched before the start of play, but the East team simply overwhelmed the West in the partner matches. Both East Captain Jeff Johnson and West Captain BJ Curry mixed up all but one of their teams after the morning four-ball matches but the East continued to dominate in the afternoon. “That’s match play for you,” Johnson said afterward. “We could play again next weekend and the results could be totally different.”

The Cup Matches began in 1994 and were renamed The Hieronymus Cup Matches after the late Damon Hieronymus of Sedalia. Hieronymus bequeathed funds held in trust to the Missouri Golf Association in after his death in 1997 “to be used for the betterment of amateur and junior golf in Missouri.” The MGA has used these monies since then to offset some expenses in staging the yearly matches that now include a total of 40 players.

Senior West Captain BJ Curry spoke about Hieronymus at the Saturday evening players’ dinner. “I owe my start and continued participation in golf to Damon. He was a great supporter of me and of Joe (Bellmer) and a true fan of junior and amateur golf, “ he said. “Just a wonderful, wonderful man I was lucky to know.”
